FOLDING KNIVES
2021

Ryobi aimed to refresh its hand tool lineup with a more modern design language, starting with a low-cost product that could excite brand loyalists. Pocket knives were selected as a first step in this refresh.
Originally given to me as a small side project during my internship, I ultimately led the design from early sketches through production, contributing to my promotion to Staff Industrial Designer within two months.

PERIMETERS
Design Intent: Develop a folding pocket knife that delivers the ergonomic confidence and usability of leading competitors while establishing a clear Ryobi identity within the refreshed hand tool category.
Business Needs: Revitalize perception in low-cost hand tools and introduce a product that could quickly build excitement in the field.
Technical Constraints:
• Integrate a patented liner lock mechanism
• Explore simple, low-cost blade storage concepts
• Establish a cohesive visual brand direction for future SKUs
Timeline: Twelve to fourteen weeks from initial exploration to production-ready CAD.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Explored multiple handle directions that considered natural grip positions, finger indexing, and comfort during common use.
Early sketches ranged from softer, organic curvature to sharper, chiseled forms that aligned more strongly with Ryobi’s power tool language. CAD studies helped refine proportions, surface transitions, and manufacturing details.

OUTCOME
The knife sold out immediately upon release, became a highly requested limited item, and helped establish the visual direction for Ryobi’s renewed hand tool category.
